Climate change impacts on everyday life, which is why, in addition to climate action (mitigation), adaptation to climate change is an increasingly important area of activity for local governments. The city of Bochum took up this issue back in 2012 and developed a climate adaptation strategy which is now set to be applied in practice.
The New Paths to Climate-Adapted Urban Planning Based on the Example of the Feldmark Quarter Model Area (Plan4Change) lighthouse project, which is being funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Society (BMUB), is to be used to pick up know-how derived from the climate adaptation strategy and to incorporate it into the Feldmark Quarter planning project by way of example. The framework planning for urban housing land development for more than 1,000 residential units has already begun. Over the coming years this planning will then be put in more concrete terms, and the land will be successively developed and sold. The project area covers the transitional zone between settlement areas and open spaces. It is here that climate adaptation measures are most urgent so as to prevent negative climate impacts.
Experts from the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu), the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) and Eimer Project Consulting (EPC) will continuously support and evaluate the planning process for the Feldmark Quarter over three years. The involvement of important stakeholder groups from different sectors is essential for the pilot project and guidelines for successfully incorporating and implementing measures into local government planning will be drawn up.
